The Urban and Architectural Ideas of Fumihiko Maki

From the fall semester of the 2021 academic year and funded by industry donations, Keio University SFC began offering the course "Urbanism Ideas and Architecture of Fumihiko Maki" as an archiving activity regarding the work of Fumihiko Maki. In this class, we ask students to study his architectural works and writings based on the following intellectual and noble convictions. The course ties to explore and contemplate Fumihiko Maki’s footsteps as an architect.

Humanism

Development of a language of polyphony and interactivity in urban design through an engagement with civic issues across space and time

Cosmopolitanism

Exchange with the currents of international culture, critical consideration of Japanese design in a global context, and mediation of Modern, regional, and international tendencies in architecture

Collaboration

Creation of an atmosphere of collaboration by limiting the size of the office and project teams and encouraging communication through sketches, drawings, models, and open conversation

Decency

Brought up in the city of Tokyo as a background, the embodiment of refined Japanese culture that seeks modesty and purity
