Fumihiko Maki’s works and ideas are one of the precious collections of materials that tell the story of his footsteps and the international cultural exchanges that led to his achievements. Founded at Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus and started its activity in March 2022, the Fumihiko Maki Archive is an endeavor to collect parts of Fumihiko Maki’s materials. The archive’s activity aims to organize his collection of materials to be effectively used by students studying architecture and urban design and those who aspire to research these fields worldwide.
At this point, we have only begun researching a small portion of the extensive material. We recognize that the archive will continue as an endless activity in the future. We believe that expanding the opportunities for people around the world to come into contact with the contents of this project is in line with the wishes of Mr. Fumihiko Maki, from whom we have received the donation. It is our goal to continue this practice for many years to come.
Fumihiko Maki is one of the most prominent global architects of his generation. Through his architecture, writing, and teaching, Maki established himself as a public intellectual and standard bearer for the profession of architecture in Japan and internationally. Over six decades of practice, he has contributed significantly to the built environment, architectural discipline, and practice. His long list of awards includes the Thomas Jefferson Award in Architecture, the International Union of Architects Gold Medal, the Praemium Imperiale Award, and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal. In 1993, he received the Pritzker Prize, the profession’s most prestigious award.
