About Fumihiko Maki

Fumihiko Maki is one of the most prominent global architects of his generation. Born in 1928 in Tokyo, he graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo in 1952. He completed his master's degree at Harvard University in the United States. He also taught as an Associate Professor of Urban Design at the University of Washington and Harvard University. After returning to Japan in 1965, he established his design firm, Maki & Associates. He served as a professor at the University of Tokyo until 1989. 

Through his writings and educational activities, as well as his numerous design projects both in Japan and abroad, he has received absolute national and international recognition as an architect of dignity and intelligence. He has received numerous awards both at home and abroad. 

His major awards include the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture in 1990, the Prince of Wales Prize in Urban Design (UIA) from Harvard University in 1993, and the Praemium Imperiale from Japan Art Association in 1999. Among his many awards, he won the Pritzker Prize in 1993, the most prestigious award for an architect. In 2011 he won his Gold Medal from the AIA American Institute of Architects.

Keio University was founded in 1858 by Yukichi Fukuzawa, a distinguished scholar and champion of social reform and modernization. Keio is the oldest institute of western higher education in Japan and among its most prestigious. 

Keio University Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC) is one of 11 Keio University campuses in Tokyo and Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. Fumihiko Maki designed most of the SFC campus, which opened in 1990.
